What kinds of products do you offer in the store?
Buddy’s produces whole birds, boneless and skinless breasts, tenders, wings, leg quarters, drumsticks and more.
What is air chilling and how does it relate to chicken?
Chicken that is Air-Chilled is processed and cooled individually using cold air, rather than the more common method of placing the chickens in a communal bath of water. The air-chilled method prevents the absorption of water, and it greatly reduced the potential of bacterial cross contamination. This is how we chill our chickens at Buddy’s, and we think it makes them taste a lot better!
What does it mean if a chicken is labeled “minimally processed”? Is that good?
We think so! Chicken that’s minimally processed means that no physical processes we used that “fundamentally alter the raw product.” So, what you see in the store is what you get!
What about other stuff? Do you inject chicken with growth hormones? Antibiotics?
We’ve never used growth stimulants, hormones or antibiotics on our birds. We raise them from chicks the way nature intended, feed them a natural grain diet fortified with extra vitamins and minerals that doesn’t contain any animal by-products, and process them humanely. The result is the best chicken for your table that doesn’t contain any artificial ingredients or preservatives. Buddy himself felt strongly that the best chicken was a chicken that came straight from nature – and that’s a philosophy we follow to this day.
Do you inject your chickens with salt?
We don’t inject our birds with water, broths or solutions of any kind. They don’t need them for flavor – and we don’t want our customers paying for water. All you get is pure, natural chicken that tastes great!
Are your chickens free-range? What is that exactly?
All our birds are raised humanely – never tied down or caged. And they’re free to roam in traditional chicken houses – not cages – with plenty of space for each bird so they’re not crammed in with lots of chicken friends. That’s uncomfortable for anyone – especially chickens!
What's the difference between chicken that’s labeled USDA Natural, Free Range and Organic?
So many choices – so many labels! We know it’s confusing, and we’ll do our best to decipher the lingo. And we’ll start with what we do here at Buddy’s. Buddy’s Natural Chickens eat an all-vegetable diet and don’t have antibiotics or any animal byproducts in the feed. And, to make sure our feed stays that way, we make it ourselves – owning and operating our own feed mill. We don’t add any artificial ingredients during processing; and our overall processing is minimal, because we also process our chickens ourselves in our own plant to make sure.USDA Natural chicken requires minimal processing and can’t have any artificial ingredients added during processing, but doesn’t expressly prohibit feeding the chickens antibiotics or from including animal byproducts in the feed. Also, the USDA requirements for “natural” chicken apply only to chicken processing – not raising the chickens.Free Range chicken requires access to the outdoors, but doesn’t expressly prohibit antibiotics or animal byproducts in the feed. Finally, chicken that’s labeled Organic must have access to the outdoors – including shade, shelter, exercise areas, fresh air and direct sunlight; must be raised using only allowed substances in the prescribed manner; must be raised without exposure to or administration of any prohibited substances; can’t have antibiotics or any animal byproducts in the feed; and must be fed only organic grains.
